I just got through reading that ridiculous article about Brandon Marshall and his best friend Mike what's-his-face from Jacksonville talking about how Marshall ain't that bad of a guy and how he's been misrepresented in the media. Apparenently we misunderstood something about his character in the wake of him beating his girlfriend, getting arrested for a DUI, getting one of his teammates shot and killed during an altercation with his cousin. Apparently he's not a bad guy, and in fact, he's exactly the type of guy you'd want to hang out with and let your kids spend time around.
Anyways, so somebody started a thread/poll after the article and asked if you would want Marshall on your team given that you'd have to pay Top 5 WR money to get him? That's when I noticed a couple of pretty interesting points that made me very proud to be a Steelers fan. First off, 65% of those polled said they would like to have Brandon Marshall on their team and would be willing to pay top 5 dollars; obviously the other 35% said "no" - I think the "other 35%", must have been Steelers fans because they were the only ones on that board saying they wouldn't. Not one Steelers fan said they'd take him and they all cited similar reasons to back their decision making.
The fact of the matter is that the Steelers run the classiest program in the NFL - no argument about it. They do not sacrifice the integrity of the Rooney's legacy in pursuit of "talent". The Steelers do not recruit cry babies, primadonas, thugs, criminals or chatterboxes who can't seem to stay out of the headlines because the Steelers play real-deal, old-school, smash-mouth, no-frills, no cheerleaders, win-or-go-home football. Brandon Marshall couldn't handle being asked to lay people out to make way for the run the way Hines Ward does - he'd just cry to the press about not getting the ball thrown his way more often, then go home and punch his girlfriend in the face. Brandon Marshall couldn't fit into the city of Pittsburgh - a guy like him could never appreciate the kind of fans we have there; it's too blue-collar for him. Pittsburgh might be the only citiy where the fans have almost as much control over the football team as the owners and coaches do.
I also noticed that the 65% that said yes consisted largely of Cowboys, Raiders and Micheal Vick fans. I got a little chuckle out of that myself. The Steelers fans on the post made certain to bring up that we have won more titles and have fewer arrests than the rest of the league.

Cujo, you're absolutely right about Brandon Marshall. The guy has incredible talent. No doubt. I still cringe at the game where he beat the Steelers single-handedly. Marshall had Ike Taylor gasping at the thin air in Denver all night. They couldn't cover him and once he got the ball, they couldn't tackle him.
But for all his on-field talent, his off-the-field problems and constant complaining are a lockerroom nightmare. Me-first attitudes destroy the most basic ingredient of championship teams -- teamwork, self sacrifice for team success, looking out for the other guy. The Steelers organization gets this. That's why they are consistently challenging for another championship.
What's just as impressive is that Steelers fans get it. I don't see Steelers fans getting all hot and bothered when a free agent with a big ego hits the market the way fans and owners of teams like the Redskins, Cowboys or Raiders do.
Makes me that much prouder to support the Black and Gold.
